China strategy needed to confront human rights

Without a plan to tackle both trade and human rights at once, say scholars, Canada will continue to be criticized over addressing one and not the other.

On July 18, Chinese security forces opened fire on a peaceful protest by ethnic minority Uighurs in Hotan, China, killing 14 and arresting 70 others, according to Uighur activists. Chinese government officials, speaking through state-controlled media, called it a terrorist attack and claimed a mob assaulted the local police station and took several people hostage.
