New United States military strategy a fork in the road for Canadian Forces

Should Canada take on more of the traditional US role policing the world?

A new United States military strategy paints a bleak picture of a world threatened by China, Iran, and Al Qaeda and kept stable through the use of armed drones, stealth bombers, missile defence systems, cyber warfare, surveillance—and global policing increasingly shouldered by stalwart allies such as Canada.

The question now is: will Canada embrace that vision?

I think in 2012 the US will spend more than that on military. Proposed guebdts and estimated spending on military are usually a lot lower than they are in reality.Other programs like the Social Security branch of spending need restructuring in the next several years in order to stay within their bounds as well.

Mr. Staples argued that this was a signal that Canada should craft its military doctrine more with a multilateral bent, embracing institutions like the United Nations.

"The UN is ideally suited for that kind of thing. Maybe we should be refocusing our efforts on supporting the UN and multilateral efforts, rather than doing big Afghanistan-like campaigns and Libya-like campaigns," he said.

I have always thought that Hockey, Rugby and Soccer were the best multilateral efforts Canadian Society could make. We don't want to send one embassador but many embassadors. I hear China has a great rugby team at the Agricultural University of Bejing. Even Iran has a Women's Rugby Team.

Personally I would lead with my strengths which in our case is Sport, Communications and Technology. Most peoples love to compete and learn a new game.

Play has always brought communities together and developed fierce competition. Most British and some Canadian ships field rugby teams as part of their ambassadorship programs.

Canadians need to maintain the worldwide respect that they have long held as a generous friendly nation. We are the salt of the earth but if the salt loses it's saltiness what good is it?

I can't understand why the United States regards China as its enemy, though it says it doesn't think so. I am sure you can image this: Someone sends a lot of soldiers, warships, fighter jets, even aircraft carriers and nuke submarines just in front of your door, but ten thousnd kms away from his own home. yet he still says, "You are threatening me!" I think this just the thoughts of hegemony.

I feel Canada should refrain all together from the us military focus , They are not doing this for freedom but for the personal gain !! they are a growing dictatorship and don't feel that most Canadians or Americans are happy with the way things have been playing out I have heard it said many times that USA considers Canada to be its Buffer in case of war but I don't feel we should sacrifice our sons and daughters for another countries cause or search to be top dog of the world!!

I am at a loss why you quote Steven Staples, the man has a hate on for the Canadian military that is beyond reasonable. It's laughable that anyone would want to tie ourselves to a UN led mission, considering the failure rate of those.
